Want to optimize your technical skills training at home? Join this year's surgical skills session to learn how to build and use your very own "home gym" for cardiac surgery skills practice. This session is designed for all skill levels from medical students to cardiac surgery residents in training programs across Canada.
- highlight what and how to use simulation for cardiac surgery training;
- discuss the use of simulation practice outside of the OR and how it leads to intraoperative progression;
- learn how to build home simulators to practice cardiac surgical skills; and
- learn basic techniques and exercises to improve technical skills in the OR.

Dr. Lachapelle is a Cardiac Surgeon at McGill and the McGill University Health Centre. As Adair Chair he is responsible and oversees all Surgical Education at the University including Undergraduate, Postgraduate as well as Fellowship training. He developed two Master concentrations for the Department of Surgery; one in Education and the other in Innovation. He is the founder of the Steinberg Centre for Simulation and Interactive Learning, a multidisciplinary and inter-professional Centre of simulation excellence which opened in 2006. Dr. Lachapelle was Program Director for Cardiac Surgery and is actively involved in curriculum development, teaching, and assessment. He is a consultant for the Royal College of the Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and is an International Educator. At the American College of Surgeons, he sits on the Accreditation Committee for Educational Institutes. Dr Lachapelle has been recognized for his leadership and has won the John Reudy Award for Innovation in Medical Education and McGill University’s David Johnston AwardMichael Moon

Lina Elfaki is currently a third-year medical student at the University of Toronto (UofT). She also completed her Undergraduate Degree in Physiology and Human Biology – Health and Disease and Master’s Thesis focused on Gene Therapy for Aortic Aneurysms at UofT. She is an aspiring Cardiac Surgeon with a recent research focus on Hemiarch vs. Extended Arch Repair for Type I Aortic Dissections working with Dr. Maral Ouzounian. As an immigrant Black woman, she has been promoting gender and racial equity in healthcare and STEM education. Therefore, she has been researching racial and socioeconomic disparities in cardiac patient care with the goal of optimizing access to surgical care within and beyond Canada. Khalil Khalil is a Master’s in Biomedical Sciences student at the University of Montreal, with a focus on cardiovascular sciences. He is a member of the laboratory of Dr. Noiseux at the Centre de Recherche du Centre Hospitalier de l’Université de Montréal (CRCHUM). He is one of the recipients of the 2020 Have a Heart Bursary Award. Khalil attended the Lebanese American University (LAU) in Beirut, Lebanon where he received his B.S. in Biology and the Riyad Nassar Leadership Award in 2015 and his M.D. in General Medicine along with the School of Medicine Leadership Award in 2019. He was a volunteer at the Lebanese Red Cross since 2013, and then moved to the Canadian Red Cross upon his arrival in Canada in 2019. Khalil plans on pursuing a specialization in the cardiovascular field and will apply for a residency position this year.Jeremy Levett

Yuan Qiu is a final year medical student at McMaster Unviersity in Hamilton, Ontario. She graduated with a Bachelor of Health Sciences also from McMaster. She is currently working on research projects about intra-operative and peri-operative management of cardiac surgery patients, arrhythmias and anticoagulation, and management of valvular diseases. Her clinical interests include cardiac surgery and peri-operative cardiovascular care. -

John Smith draws from his life story when writing about the experiences of migrant workers. His first series of poems, My Father's Hands, appeared in The New Yorker and describes how his family crossed the Texas border to give Manuel and his brothers a better life. After receiving his Master's in Fine Arts from Columbia University, Mr. Smith wrote three nonfiction novels about his experiences, including Under the Streaming Sun, which earned the National Prize for Arts and Sciences in 2008. Mr. Smith is currently working on a collection of fictional short stories to be published in early 2021.
